Day 2 Reflection

  • What did you do today?
    • Today we did the extraction and identification of artificial colourings. We had m&ms as our candies. So each of us had to pick different colours, therefore i picked yellow. Then we had to separate the colour from the candies. We used different chemicals to separate the colour. Then we used wool which was positively charged to attract the negatively charged particles in the coloured water. Then we did some other tests to find out the Rf value of the food colourings added.

  • What did you learn today?
    • I learnt about the different Rf values of the candies and I also learnt that there would be 2 or more colours in the food colourings. Food colourings are added to increase the visual appeal of the food. But if it is added more than the regulated amount of what the Law has asked to put, they will get into trouble.

  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
    • I got to know how much food colourings should be added. Because if the amount of food colourings are added wrongly to the food, there might be cases whereby people may die. It is also good for us to know why we need to ad food colourings and the people out there need to know how much food colourings should be added.
    • The best part of today was separating the colours from the candies. I had to try a lot of times because the candies kept on breaking so i have to do the experiment again. The next fun part was when we go to put the drops of colours on the plate to find out the Rf value.
  • I think as for now i really do not have any questions :)
